Volleyball wins Sectional Title
Centennial Volleyball (34-5) defeated Chatham-Glenwood, winning the 2009 Lincoln Sectional.
Centennial started slow, scoring no points off of their first six servers leaving them trailing 6-11. They continued to give up points and trailed 10-17. Then at 17-21, Centennial made their move tying the game at 21. Chatham sided out and the teams traded points 21-22, 22-22, 22-23, 23-23. The Chargers finally took a lead at 24-23 before losing the server and knotting things up again. They scored points 25 and 26 on a Melanie Moore setter dump and the set point on a Chatham player interfering over the net with Moore's set.
Set two proved to be a repeat performance. They slowed the Titans somewhat, but still were at a 1-5 initial deficit and still trailed at 9-12. The Titans stretched to a 7 point lead at 12-19 and 15-22, before a Kailyn Dennemann service run brought the score back to 21-22. The Chargers pushed hard on the next server to take a first lead at 24-23. However, at that point, set two swung the other way. The Chargers committed a hitting error to tie at 24-24 and then after two longer rallies fell to two Titan kills.
Set three again saw a slow Charger start, but this time they force Chatham to slow as well. Set three was tied at multiple points up to 7-7. At that point, the Chargers moved out to an 11-7 lead before falling to 12-15. They rallied back to 16-15, trailed at 17-18, before taking a final lead, moving out to 22-18, 23-19, and 25-20 to finish the match.
Morgan Leach led with 11 kills and 3 blocks. Alysson Gatens flourished with 10 kills and 8 digs. Cori Harris had 9 kills, 11 digs, 2 blocks, and 3 aces. Kailyn Dennemann contributed 19 digs and 2 aces. Melanie Moore had 35 assists and 6 digs. Kelly Watchtel had 3 kills and 2 blocks. Megan Scharnett had 5 digs.
The Chargers visit Chatham Glenwood's gym on Saturday to face Breese Mater Dei in a Supersectional game for entry to the four-team state tournament. Centennial is now one of eight teams remaining in class 3A volleyball.
