Game Summary:
CHARGERS 25, 20, 26
IHSA SUPER-SECTIONALS 15, 25, 24

Volleyball invades Lincoln, moves to Sectional Final

The Chargers drew host Lincoln in the Sectional semifinal.  The two teams had not met since last year's Sectional semifinal in Mt. Zion.  The atmosphere was appropriate to a post-season contest with a sizable fan contingent on both sides and both teams ready to play with intensity.  Centennial to defend last year's title and Lincoln to defend their home court.

In set one, Centennial may have had an initial edge in play and control, but Lincoln kept the score knotted early, tying at 6-6 and otherwise always within a point.  At 10-9, the Chargers sided out and Kara Johnson put together a service run to make it 14-9.  The Chargers never looked back, quieting the home crowd at winning 25-15.

In set two, Lincoln emerged even more determined, but did not have early success, trailing the Chargers though to 9-7 before a 3 point-run gave them a 9-10 lead.  The teams again traded points to 12-12, but again the Chargers were unable side-out and were dropped 7 of the next 8 points.  They eventually fell 20-25.

In set three, Lincoln continued with momentum early and the Chargers first briefly led at 8-7.  They established momentum and a small cushion with a Melanie Moore service run that gave them a 16-11 lead.  Lincoln continued to chip away as the teams traded points.  They closed to 17-18 and Cori Harris served the Chargers to 17-21.  Lincoln countered and brought the score back to 20-21, and then tied at 22-22 on a Charger overpass creating a fresh game and forcing the match's final timeout.

In the fresh game, Lincoln's #3 started with a missed serve: Chargers 23-22.  Emma Lockmiller serves for CHS; Lincoln attacks from the right and Harris digs the ball into the center of the court.  Kelly Wachtel attempts to put the ball over with one hand and is whistled for a double-contact: 23-23.  The Chargers pass up the Lincoln server, but setter and hitter are unable to connect and the ball falls into the net: 23-24 Lincoln, Match Point.  Harris gets the serve-receive pass to Moore, who sets aggressively to Wachtel in the middle.  Wachtel's attack goes down with no chance for a Lincoln touch: 24-24.  With renewed momentum,  Moore goes back to serve for the Chargers.  Lincoln's prolific outside hitters misfire and the ball fails to come over: 24-25 Chargers, Match Point.  Lincoln runs a right-side attack off of serve; Moore digs, but Alysson Gatens is forced to direct the ball over on two; Gatens blocks the return and Lincoln send their third hit - a free ball - out of bounds.  Centennial wins the rubber set, 26-24.

Harris led the Chargers with 13 kills on the night, also adding 2 aces and 6 digs.  Morgan Leech added 9 kills and 2 blocks.  Gatens had 2 kills, 2 aces, and 4 digs.  Moore set for 27 assists, while also adding 2 block assists and 4 digs.  Libero Kailyn Dennemann contributed 11 digs and one ace.  Wachtel's final kill brought her total to 4.  Johnson pitched in with 3 kills and 2 aces.  Freshmen Lauren Cloyd, in limited action, also put down 2 kills and had 1 key block assist.

The Chargers are 33-5 and face Chatham's Glenwood High School in the Sectional Final on Thursday at 7 p.m., again at Lincoln Community High School.  The Chargers will attempt to repeat their 2-set victory of Chatham on the road from October 22.
