Centennial takes Regional Title over Urbana
The Chargers traveled to Mt. Zion on Saturday to meet Urbana in the Regional Final. Centennial started strong taking a 5-0 lead; Urbana answered and tied the set at 5-5. Trading of single or pairs of points continued until at 11-11 the Chargers scored 4 straight points. Beyond that stretch, neither team was unable to take charge of the set. Urbana nibbled at the Charger lead, closing to 1 at 23-22, but were unable to close.
In set two, Urbana opened to 0-2 before Centennial entered the fray at 3-2. The teams continued until 11-11, again with neither team able to press an advantage. The score remained close at 20-19 with Urbana serving. Centennial sided-out and Cori Harris served 2 points, creating a 23-19 lead. The teams traded points to 24-21 with Urbana serving. Melanie Moore set Morgan Leech off of serve-receive to finish the match and the Regional.
This is Centennial's third straight volleyball Regional Championship. The 2009 team is 32-5 and will play Sectional host Lincoln in Tuesday's semifinal.
In the Final, Morgan Leech led the team with 14 kills. Melanie Moore had 29 assists. Cori Harris added 4 kills and 2 aces. Alysson Gatens and Kelly Wachtel contributed 4 kills each. Kailyn Dennemann led the defensive effort with 12 digs.
