Game Summary:
WARRIORS 2
IHSA SECTIONAL vs STEVENSON 1

Varsity Soccer Advances to Sectional Final

For the second year in a row, the Deerfield Warrior soccer team has advanced to the sectional final.  The Warriors punched their ticket with a dramatic 2-1 victory over the host Stevenson Patriots that lasted through 4 sudden victory overtimes and was ultimately settled by penalty kicks.  Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities in a fairly even first half and continued the pattern into the second half.  With 8 minutes remaining, Michael Newman beat his defender and dribbled into the penalty area, where he was taken down while attempting to shoot.  Joey Calistri stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick, and he made no mistake to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.  Stevenson then attacked with desperation.  Shane Wehrheim clear a ball off the goal line with three minutes remaining, and Matt Glassman made a pair of clutch saves to preserve the lead.  With only 17 seconds remaining, Stevenson collected a loose ball at the top of the penalty area and curled a shot just inside the far post to tie the game.  The Warriors were temporarily back on their heels, and only superb goalkeeping from Glassman, aided by another goalline clearance from Brandon Mayer, allowed them to survive the first two overtime periods.  The Warriors reasserted themselves and dominated the last two overtimes, but neither team could find the net.  The Warriors won the toss and elected to shoot second.  Stevenson converted its first kick, and Ian Hardison-Sanchez calmly tied it for Deerfield.  Stevenson's second kick just barely eluded the onrushing Glassman, and the Patriots had a 2-1 lead when Ollie Speirs' kick was saved.  Stevenson made its third shot to go up 3-1, but Connor Holloway coverted to pull the Warriors within one.  Glassman dove to his right to save the fourth Patriot attempt, and Scottie Lakin drilled his pk just under the crossbar to tie it at 3-3.  The stage was set for the decisive fifth round, and Glassman came up huge, diving to his left to smother the Stevenson effort.  Calistri drilled his kick into the far corner to give the Warriors a thrilling victory.  Matt Glassman had a career night, making 13 saves, several of the spectacular variety.  With the win, the Warriors improve to 18-3-1 on the season and will take on Lake Forest for the sectional title on Saturday at 11AM.
