For the fourth consecutive year, the Deerfield Warriors advanced to the regional final by winning their first tournament match. David Panter and Joey Calistri provided the goals to lead the Warriors to a 2-1 victory over regional host Glenbrook North. The Spartans adopted a defensive posture from the start, allowing the Warriors to possess the ball, but clogging the middle with five and six defenders to prevent shots on goal. Deerfield finally broke through in the 30^th minute when Scottie Lakin beat his defender on the left flank and whipped a cross into the penalty area for David Panter. Panter’s shot was blocked by a defender, but he gathered the rebound and hammered it home for a 1-0 lead. Glenbrook North tied the score two minutes before halftime when the Warriors failed to clear a free kick and the loose ball in the box was finished off by the Spartans. After a tense second half in which Deerfield generated several good chances and Glenbrook North launched some dangerous counterattacks, Joey Calistri stepped up for the Warriors. Calistri beat his defender on the right side and dribbled into the penalty area, where he was pushed down from behind to earn the penalty kick with twelve minutes remaining. After a brief delay while the officials conferred about the time remaining on the clock, Calistri calmly stepped up and slid the ball inside the right hand post for a 2-1 lead. Matt Glassman made a key save as the clock was winding down to preserve the victory. The Warriors will now take on Carmel in the regional final at Techny at 3PM on Saturday.
