BOYS Var GOLF Vs. Sectionals
South Elgin's Xavier Owens and Larkin's Ryan Smith each shot 76 to
advance as individuals. Seventy six was the cut-off score for
individual advancement, and Smith and Owens were among ten players to
shoot that number on the day. Both Owens and Smith began their
rounds on the back nine and had to rally late to get to the qualifying
mark. Owens chipped in for birdie on the par-four ninth to end his
round. "I really needed to keep my hands warm," Owens said. "It
was really cold and I'm a feel player on the course, so I just to
wanted to keep warm. My chip-in was the highlight today." Smith
overcame a potentially disastrous 40 on his front nine, including an
eight on the par-four 18th, to go Downstate for the second straight
season. "I was just hoping that 76 would be that eighth spot,"
said Smith. "The back nine out here is a lot tougher out here. I just
figured the scores were going to be higher today. I just made a bunch
of pars on my back nine. It feels great to be going back Downstate."
