- When Lyons Township sophomore Katie Ellis was standing close to Homewood-Flossmoor standout Ashley Armstrong on the driving range prior to the state tournament Friday and Saturday, she started to realize the significance of the weekend.
Armstrong is one of the top golfers in the state and led the Vikings to the state championship at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
"For me it was a shock to see that I'm out there competing with some of the top golfers in the state," Ellis said of her first State experience. It was so exciting seeing a golfer like Ashley Armstrong and others coming in with amazing scores. It was definitely exciting going down there. It was everything I expected and more."
Ellis ended up tying for 69th with a two-day, 36-hole total of 180. She shot 92 on Friday and improved with an 88 on the second day.
"I didn't play to my ability for the most part, but I learned a lot," Ellis said. "I was nervous at the beginning, but you kind of get used to having people watching you after a while. Having my parents and friends come down really helped."
Ellis hopes to build off the experience in the future.
"Hopefully next year I can go back and compete even better," Ellis said. "This experience should definitely help me next year. I'll have another year of experience and there won't be as much pressure. I think that will be beneficial because the pressure won't get to me. It was definitely a little nerve-racking my first time at State."
