IHSA Regional Champions 2009
Senior leadership led the Sandburg Eagles to winning their IHSA Regional Championship in 2009. The Eagles beat BLoom 3-0. Sean Healey (Captain), Dave Mulac (Captain), Kyle Mrozek, Alex Hejna and Trevor Heide made a commitment to retake this title for Eagle Soccer at the beginning of this 2009 season as a team goal. The Eagles accomplished this team goal with their leadership. These seniors kept the Sandburg tradition alive by winning the 17th IHSA regional since the program began in 1983.
This victory was a total team effort. Keeper Sean Healey recorded his fifth shutout of the season. In the first ten minutes of the game Sandburg's offensive attack was relentless. Taylor Zalewski scored a goal, and had an assist. Trevor Heide tallied two goals in this game. Dan Giron and George Vinihakis recorded assists as well. Sandburg's defensive effort was outstanding. For 80 minutes, the Eagle's defensive play prevented Bloom from scoring any goals. The cliche that defense wins championships would be truly appropriate in describing this victory today.
