SOUTH INTER-CONFERENCE ASSOCIATION

ATHLETIC DIRECTORS’ GENERAL MEETING

BON VIVANT COUNTRY CLUB

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2000

 

I.    Welcome
  • Dennis Michels opened the meeting with a welcome and acknowledgement of guests.
II. Football Teams Playing Out-of-State Opponents
  • Athletic Directors were reminded that schools playing out-of-state schools in football must have the opponent’s schedule on file at the IHSA Office by Friday, September 30, 2000. No playoff points will be awarded for schools not in compliance.
III.  Discussion on Assignment Chair’s Pay and Dropping Extra Charges
  • Scott Loess and Dennis Michels led the discussion relative to Assignment Chairperson compensation for extra charges. Dennis will bring up this issue at the next Principals’ Board of Control Meeting.
IV. Sportsmanship Summit
  • Homer Thomas, H.L. Richards, will host this year's Sportsmanship Summit.
  • A representative from each conference will be assigned to assist.
V. Officials’ Evaluation Process
  • Officials’ ratings will be conducted on the IHSA web page. Schools should have received information from the IHSA. Coaches are also asked to rate the top 15 officials. There were numerous concerns raised regarding the process, logistics and the necessity of a dual rating system.
VI. Softball Revisions – Ron Ray
  • Moved by Len Motta, seconded by Robert Lightell that the following criteria for the SICA Conference At-Large position for Softball be approved.
  1. Must have played in at least half of the Conference games.
  2. Must have at least 20 at-bats, including walks, like current DH criteria.
  3. Can be nominated for All-Conference at another position and if not selected, then can go into At-Large nomination.
  4. Player can also be eligible for At-Large position if they played more than one position during Conference games during a season and have met criteria #1 and #2.

Motion passed unanimously.

VII. Fall Sports Schedules Discussion
  • Football – Larry Bernard stated that the football schedules are set for the next cycle.
  • Girls’ Volleyball – Todd Shafer reminded everyone of the Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday rotation of games.
  • Boys’ Golf – Lou Narish, Tinley Park
  • Girls’ Golf – Lou Narish, Tinley Park
  • Boys’ and Girls’ Cross-Country – Robert Lightell will get a triangular format.
  • Boys’ Soccer – Len Motta stated that there is a strong feeling among the coaches to discontinue the double round robin format.
  • Girls’ Swimming – Todd Shafer reminded the Board of Control that conference meets should remain on Tuesdays for officials’ assignments.
  • Girls’ Tennis – Tom Sidote, no issues raised.
VIII.Discussion on new By-Laws on Summer Contract
  • There was a lengthy discussion on the new Summer Contract By-Laws. The first summer appeared to run smoothly. Ron Ray brought up the issue of compensation for coaches.
IX. Conference Alignments with Lincoln-Way East Included
  • Jimmy Daniels will make the final placement of Lincoln-Way East in the Handbook.
X. Technology Committee
  • Mr. Evan Eschmeyer gave a presentation after the general meeting on the services offered by his company Big Tim Recruit.com, Inc.
  • Duane Butteris, Downers Grove North, gave a lengthy presentation on the web page capabilities for scheduling and other SICA informational needs.

  • None
XII. New Business
  • Larry Bernard discussed IADA membership and IHSA Legislative Commission vacancies for the targeted profile of Female Principal and Racial Minority Principal. Dr. Von Mansfield, Rich Central, was presented as a good candidate for this position.
  • Homer Thomas presented a cooperative team proposal involving Richards, Shepard, Eisenhower and Oak Lawn in the sport of Girls’ Gymnastics.

Moved by Tom Sidote, seconded by Jimmy Daniels to approve the cooperative team proposal.

Motion passed unanimously

  • Dave Brost discussed recent mailings from the National Federation.
  • Kent Irvin stated that National Federation ball markings will be enforced this year, per Marty Hickman.
  • Tom Sidote will discuss baseball and softball specifications.
  • Kent Irvin will make a presentation on baseball and softball revisions at the next general meeting.
  • Ken Shultz encouraged everyone to join NIAAA.
