Game Summary:
SABRES 1
Elgin 1

Elgin's late goal ties Streamwood

For 72 minutes on Tuesday at Memorial Field, Elgin couldn't get the breakthrough against Streamwood's defense.

Down 1-0, the Maroons offense had dominated the second half but was continually stifled by the Sabres back line.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere during a late offensive push, fullback Carlos Moreno fired a shot from 34 yards out and into the upper-left corner of the net to secure a 1-1 draw in Upstate Eight Conference action.

"I thought about shooting it and I just shot it and it came out," Moreno said. "I thought it was going up (and over) but all of a sudden it started to come down (into the corner)."

Added Streamwood coach Matt Polovin: "They get that one chance and that's all it takes sometime. It's a little frustrating because we couldn't put them away. The defense worked really well together. They were shutting everyone down and then the one miscue, I guess. I feel bad for them."

Elgin (4-3-4, 0-1-1) fired six shots on goal in the second half and had five corner kicks but was only able to put three shots on target due to the defensive work of the Sabres -- primarily left back Julian Arnold and center back Mike Chwistek.

"Bottom line is we need to convert a couple of those into goals and our record could be a lot different than it is," Elgin coach Dave Borg said. "But that's a good step for us, to come back against a good team like they are."

Until Moreno's strike, the top plays of the half were Chwistek's one-on-one defense and blocking of forward Raul Hernandez's shot from the top of the box and Rolando Moreno's deflection off the goal line on a corner from Hernandez.

"For some of those seniors, they'll never play Streamwood again," Borg said. "They've beaten us the last couple years. I think there was a sense of urgency. The kids just came out (in the second half) and played harder."

For its part, Streamwood (4-7-4, 0-2-2) played the better of the two teams in the first half and was rewarded with an Ivan Arce goal with 12 minutes left in the first half.

Arce got his chance after Elgin goalie Osiel Ravadan came far out from the left side of the goal to retrieve a loose ball, which was deflected to Elgin's Alex Perez. Perez fired a shot on goal that ricochetted off an Elgin player and to Arce right in front of the goal mouth.

Streamwood outshot Elgin 8-4 in the first half and 6-1 in shots on target.

"In the first half we were moving the ball around nicely, getting our shots and in the second half we kind of reverted back to getting the ball and sending it up deep," Polovin said. "We have to be more consistent."

Ravadan had seven saves in the contest, while his counterpart, Edgar Leyva, had three.
