Siewert chooses golf at Taylor

WC's Siewert lands scholarship

Ex-Warriors star bound for Taylor U.

August 14, 2009

Westminster Christian baseball standout Brandon Siewert has accepted an athletic scholarship to Division III Taylor University in Upland, Ind., but with a twist.

After some consideration, Siewert opted to play golf instead of continuing his career on the diamond.

Siewert is the first Westminster Christian golfer to accept a scholarship since the program's inception in the fall of 2003.

"It definitely feels cool," Siewert said. "Even for a small school, to make history like that is pretty special."

Siewert and his family had visited Taylor to gauge his interest in the baseball program, but Siewert eventually decided on golf after discussions with Westminster Christian coach John Wedell.

"I felt that his upside in golf was, in my opinion, greater than his upside in baseball," Wedell said.

Wedell is acquainted with Taylor golf coach Jon Ochs and invited him to play a round with Siewert at the Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin.

Ironically enough, Siewert did not play up to his high standards.

"I actually didn't play that well," Siewert said. "I shot an 81, but he liked what he saw enough, I guess."

Wedell acknowledged that he was very proud of Siewert for his achievement, but also said that consistent success at the next level would not come easy.

"Brandon has a bright future there, but he has a long road ahead of him," he said. "He'll be playing with and against guys who have focused on golf as their primary sports for years and years."
